Wisconsin Veterans Memorials Catalog

The Wisconsin Veterans Memorials Catalog documents over 680 memorials dedicated to Wisconsin veterans. These memorials are located throughout the State of Wisconsin, the United States, and overseas. The Wisconsin Veterans Museum Research Center maintains this information and is dedicated to locating new memorials and other designated honors to Wisconsin veterans.

The catalog documents the history, physical condition, and location of each memorial. New memorials and honors are dedicated every year. Individuals interested in submitting a memorial that is not presently in the Memorials Catalog should:

  • Download and print a Memorials Submission form. Each memorial submitted requires an individual submission form.
  • Mail the completed form and any supportive documentation including photographs, dedication brochure, and/or historical information on the memorial to:

    Reference Archivist
30 West Mifflin Street, Suite 300
    Madison, Wisconsin 53703

Information and photographs submitted will become permanent record for the Wisconsin Veterans Memorials Catalog. This information will be added to the online catalog. If you have any questions regarding the submission of a memorial, please contact the Reference Archivist at (608) 267-1790 or email our Reference.Desk.

Legislative History

Assembly Bill 955 was introduced by then Representative David Zien (R-Gilman) during the 1989-90 legislative session. AB 955 passed as an amendment to the mini-budget bill, Senate Bill 542 on March 22, 1990. The resulting Act, 45.059 of the statutes, requires the catalog to describe each memorial as well as its location and condition. This catalog is to be maintained and updated.

Staff of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum collected the submitted information and set up a Microsoft Access database on each memorial by county from 1990-1996. The information for each memorial includes location, condition, the specific veterans or war the memorial is dedicated to, and who or what entity is responsible for the funding and maintenance of the memorial. Photographs, dedication documentation, or any further information pertinent to the memorial was also attached. As a result, this catalog of memorials exists with supportive photographic and historical documentation.

We strongly encourage County Veterans Service Officers, veterans organizations, local historical societies, and those aware of any recent dedicated memorials contact our Reference.Desk to be assured that the particular memorial is included in the Wisconsin Veterans Memorials Catalog.
